Mitch Cartwright was nominated for a PPC spotlight profile in August 2022 by Greg Kohler.
How long have you been working in PPC?
I started my first PPC job in April 2018.
How did you get started in PPC?
I’ve always been marketing obsessed.
My first experience with PPC was with blogging.
I grew a blog big enough that I could sell ad space on it when I was 15.
So I guess I started as a publisher.
If you went to college or university, what did you study? If not college, do you have any other degrees or certifications?
I have a Bachelor of Commerce with a major in marketing.
Interesting fact: I was originally going to become a high school teacher. I lasted 9-weeks in this course and then jumped right out of that degree and into BCom.
Way more exciting IMO.
What was your first job that involved PPC?
I landed my first ‘real job’ in my final year of uni. I worked in an agency where I was trained up to work across Google Ads, Facebook Ads and Bing Ads (better known now as Microsoft Ads).
What is your current position and how long have you been in it?
I’m currently working across all performance media in-house at a fintech business in Australia.
I’ve been here ~7 months.
Best. Job. Ever.
What kinds of things do you currently handle or manage in PPC?
I work across all things performance.
Not just ad accounts but also affiliates where we partner with sites that often operate under a PPC model.
Has your career path had any hiccups or nontraditional aspects that you’d like to share?
No major hiccups but I would say I’ve been fortunate enough to have the best of all worlds.
I’ve been lucky enough to work in PPC across different contexts. Since starting in the industry I’ve worked:
- In agencies: allowed me to be involved in 100’s of accounts.
- In-house: where I am able to work in a business and be immersed in the day-to-day.
- On my own brands: where I’ve spent my own money on ad campaigns – that’s where you really learn!
What are you most proud of in your PPC career?
I’ve loved working on campaigns for brands that are household names.
Especially when I use the product on a daily basis and am an avid customer.
There are also some really proud moments when you work on campaigns for a small business and you generate results strong enough for them to expand and build their business.
What, if anything, do you wish you could “do over” in your PPC career?
I would have been more involved with content creation in PPC much earlier – I didn’t start sharing anything until I was ~4-years deep into my career.
Start posting your learnings and results on Twitter, or make short videos on YouTube/TikTok.
Really anything to have been more involved in the PPC community much faster – there is so much value there!
If you could give advice to someone either considering or just starting out in PPC, what would that be?
I get these questions a lot and always tell people the same thing.
Get a job in an agency – nothing will get you to a high level of skill faster.
The more accounts you can get your hands into the better.
Are you interested in speaking opportunities? If so, what topics are your jam?
I’m always down to chat all things PPC however I can share the most value in Google Ads & Facebook Ads.
Anything else you’d like to share?
Massive shoutout to the #PPCChat.
When I first started getting involved I felt like I had hit a ceiling on my PPC knowledge .
Since joining the community I’ve learnt a ton which I know have added a lot of 0s to my results for accounts I’ve worked on.
