Leveraging Google Ads Scripts for Campaign Efficiency – Guest Post by Dii Pooler

This post is written by guest poster Dii Pooler.

The complexity of managing multiple Google Ads accounts requires smart solutions—And Google Ads Scripts provides a reliable way to automate, monitor, & analyze key tasks to enhance your campaign efficiency.
Google Ads Scripts are JavaScript-based solutions that automate repetitive tasks and allow advanced data manipulation. Scripts are coded to help us work smarter, not harder, by performing tasks such as:
  • Automating bid adjustments
  • Pausing low-performing ads
  • ‘Sending budget alerts
There are two types of Google Ads Scripts: Account level & MCC level.
Account-level scripts that are coded to manage individual Google Ads accounts and are best suited for tasks like:
  • Monitoring ad performance within one account
  • Optimizing bids or budgets for specific campaigns
  • Checking Quality Scores or broken URLs
MCC-level scripts work across multiple accounts under a Manager Account. They’re ideal for advertisers managing several accounts and are used for tasks like:
  • Cross-account keyword conflict checker
  • Sending alerts when budgets are overspent in any account
  • Generating multi-account reports that are consolidated

The main difference between MCC-level scripts & single-account scripts is that you don’t need to create and maintain separate scripts for each account. MCC-level scripts run across multiple accounts at one time.

How to Implement Google Ads Scripts: Step-by-Step Guide to Adding Scripts

1. Access the Scripts Section:
  • For account-level scripts, go to Tools & Settings > Bulk Actions > Scripts in your account.
  • For MCC-level scripts, navigate to the Manager Account and Tools & Settings > Bulk Actions > Scripts.
2.Create a New Script:
  • Click + Script and paste the code into the editor.
3.(Optional) Customize Unique Script Components Within the Code:
  • Read the instructions located within the script if there are any & modify variables like campaign names, budget limits, or account IDs to fit your specific needs.
4.Authorize the Script:
  • Click Authorize to allow the script to interact with your account data.
5.Test the Script:
  • Run the script in preview mode to verify its functionality without making live changes.
6.(Optional) Schedule the Script to run at a specific time:
  • Set up automated runs (hourly, daily, weekly) depending on the script’s purpose.

When contemplating the value of Google Ads Scripts, industry leaders like Nils Rooijmans, Mike Rhodes, and Marius Blau have consistently demonstrated their importance in driving efficiency in campaign management & analysis.

Rooijmans often highlights how scripts like the Anomaly Detector for Conversion Rates can automatically identify unusual drops or spikes in conversion performance across campaigns, enabling swift adjustments to bids or budgets. By automating such critical monitoring tasks, advertisers gain the bandwidth to focus on strategic decision-making, such as reallocating budgets to high-performing campaigns or scaling winning ad creatives. He also emphasizes the scalability of scripts like the Trend Forecaster, which analyzes historical campaign data to project future performance, providing actionable insights that extend beyond the standard Google Ads interface.

Similarly, Mike Rhodes, co-author of The Ultimate Guide to Google Ads, often explains scripts are not just time-savers—they’re efficiency multipliers. They enable marketers to handle tasks like real-time performance monitoring or budget optimization with minimal manual input, making them an essential tool for scaling campaigns effectively. Together, these experts remind us that while scripts enhance campaign management, they work best when paired with strategic thinking and human oversight.

Building on this, Marius Blau has demonstrated how actionable scripts can transform campaign management, particularly at scale. His strategies emphasize reducing human error, enhancing reporting accuracy, and streamlining processes to maintain account consistency. Blau also offers valuable insights through his newsletter, where he shares techniques for creating custom scripts using AI tools like ChatGPT. By guiding marketers through AI-driven script development, Blau empowers even those without coding expertise to implement automation effectively. This transition into AI-assisted script creation opens the door for marketers to explore how tools like ChatGPT can simplify the process of developing impactful Google Ads Scripts tailored to their specific needs.

Using AI to Create Custom Google Ads Scripts

If you’re new to Google Ads Scripts and don’t plan to learn the fundamentals of JavaScript, it’s often better to start with a pre-existing, functioning script and modify it to meet your needs. While ChatGPT can assist in enhancing or expanding a script, it may not be the best tool for creating scripts entirely from scratch. Here’s a detailed guide to getting started:
1. Define the Task
Before diving into script creation, be clear about what you want the script to accomplish. Start with a specific task to ensure you stay focused and avoid unnecessary complexity.
Examples of Tasks:
  • Pause ads with a CTR below 1%.
  • Monitor daily budget overspend.
  • Send a performance summary to a Google Sheet.
  • Pro Tip for Beginners: If you’re unfamiliar with JavaScript, search online for similar pre-built scripts that perform your desired task. These can serve as reliable starting points.
2. Prompt ChatGPT for Script Suggestions
Once you’ve identified your task, use ChatGPT to either refine an existing script or suggest new features to add. If you have no script to start with, you can ask ChatGPT to generate a simple version, but be aware that these may require fine-tuning.
Example Prompt:
“I need a Google Ads Script composed of Java Script that pauses campaigns with a CTR below 1% and logs the paused campaigns in a Google Sheet. Please provide the code.”
Why Use Existing Scripts First:
Pre-existing scripts are thoroughly tested and built on established coding principles. ChatGPT’s output often requires careful review, especially for advanced or account-specific needs.
3. Review and Customize the Script
Whether you use ChatGPT or any other third party, AI-generated Java scripts should always be reviewed for accuracy. Look for:
  • Correct API usage: Ensure the script references valid Google Ads API methods.
  • Customizable variables: Adapt variables like campaign names, budget thresholds, or email recipients to your account specifics.
  • For Beginners: If you’re working from a pre-built script, use ChatGPT to suggest how you can add features or tweak functionality. For example, prompt:
“How can I modify this script to include an email alert when a campaign is paused?”
4. Test the Script in Preview Mode
Testing is a crucial step to ensure the script runs as intended. Google Ads Scripts offers a preview mode where you can check the script’s behavior without making live campaign changes.
Checklist for Testing:
  • Are all variables correctly set?
  • Does the script handle edge cases (e.g., no campaigns meet the criteria)?
  • Are the actions logged properly for review?
  • Pro Tip: Add logging lines (e.g., Logger.log) throughout the script to track what the script is doing at each step.
5. Optimize the Code
Treat AI-generated scripts as a starting point, not the final solution. Refining the code is essential to ensure alignment with your campaign goals and to improve efficiency.
What to Optimize:
  • Performance: Avoid unnecessary API calls to reduce script execution time.
  • Scalability: Ensure the script works across large accounts or MCC-level structures.
  • Reliability: Add error handling to avoid unintended consequences, such as pausing the wrong campaigns.
  • For Beginners: Use ChatGPT to ask targeted questions about optimizing specific aspects of the script.
Example:
“How can I improve the efficiency of this script for large accounts with over 50 campaigns?”
For beginners, building upon pre-existing scripts reduces the risk of errors and accelerates learning. ChatGPT is a helpful assistant for customizing and troubleshooting, but understanding the underlying logic of pre-tested scripts ensures you start with a reliable foundation. As you gain confidence, you can gradually explore creating entirely new scripts with AI assistance.

Learning to Create Google Ads Scripts

My journey into creating Google Ads Scripts began with an essential programming background from college, where I took HTML5, CSS, and C++ courses. While I had a foundation, diving into JavaScript and Google Ads Scripts required new skills. I enrolled in Marius Blau’s course on the fundamentals of Google Ads Scripts, which provided a structured introduction to scripting and campaign automation.

After a few weeks of learning, I challenged myself to code a custom script that generates bar graph comparisons of historical data (e.g., CTR, clicks, and impressions) pulled directly from campaigns. The project took about two months of practice and refinement, but I felt confident creating and manipulating my scripts by the end. This hands-on experience improved my technical skills and gave me a deeper understanding of how automation can transform campaign management.

If you’re new to Google Ads Scripts and looking for a structured way to get started, Mike Rhodes offers a beginner-friendly course as part of his broader training on Google Ads. This course covers the basics of scripting, focusing on practical applications like automating tasks and creating performance reports. Rhodes’ clear teaching style and actionable examples make it an excellent resource for those looking to build confidence in using scripts effectively. It may complement Blau’s advanced teachings, providing a solid foundation for mastering automation.

I think this is the first time that I noticed sponsored ads in Google AI Overviews in Canada.

The surprising thing is that the ad is from a Search Campaign that does not have any broad match type keyword or AI Max settings enabled.

Hello @adsliaison there is a LOT of talk in the last week about people spotting AI MAX enabled but not reason for it to be e.g. no settings to be inline with the Sept migration etc and nothing in change history. Are there any issues at the moment? #ppcchat
